Concurrent with the increasing focus on online communications as an object of academic interest, no doubt aided by the comparative ease with which such materials can be stored, accessed, and subject to scrutiny (Herring, 2004), has been the growth in the use of the web for malevolent purposes. The relative anonymity and lawlessness of the online world has resulted in the emergence of spaces where hate speech, extremism, and other harmful behaviours - all manifested through language - can flourish unimpeded.
This year's BAAL Language & New Media SIG annual seminar is devoted to this darker underbelly of the internet. Hosted by the Aston Institute for Forensic Linguistics, Aston University, Birmingham, on Friday 16th September, the topic is The Antisocial Network. The seminar will foster discussion about the various types of criminal and non-criminal harms that take place across the online sphere, how they are adapting to change, and how they might best be tackled. We invite papers and posters across a range of topics, as detailed below.
