The 12th Conference on Linguistic and Intercultural Education – CLIE-2023
Special theme: From political correctness to cancel culture: Linguistic reflections
Political correctness as a concept emerged in the US most probably in the 1960’s in the liberals’ discourses against government propaganda, but gained momentum in the 1990’s when it started to be used by conservatives against liberal legislation. Basically, it is grounded on the axiom that any form of speech or behaviour considered offensive by different groups’ sensitivities should be eradicated, by whatever means necessary. On the other hand, according to Merriam Webster, “Cancelling and cancel culture have to do with the removing of support for public figures in response to their objectionable behaviour or opinions. This can include boycotts or refusal to promote their work.”
The aim of CLIE-2023 is to unveil the extent to which these two pervasive concepts, situated at opposite ends of a continuum, may influence linguistic manifestations in public discourse, political decisions or everyday life.
