Submissions:
As it is always the case within our community, the EMS-2023 conference is open to diverse research questions posed by researchers, aiming at different contexts and real-world problems, and employing diverse method of inquiry and conceptual frameworks.
Original/New Work Rule:
- The submitted papers must not have been presented at prior EMS conferences. However, substantively revised versions of the previously presented work is acceptable.
- At the time of submission, the papers must not have been published or accepted for publication by academic journals.
- If a paper is under review, it must NOT appear in print or online before the EMS-2023 conference (September 7-9, 2023).
We look forward to receiving submissions for:
- Research Papers and Posters
- Doctoral, Alumni and Faculty Consortium Proposals
- Discussion Panels
- Workshops
All submissions are to be submitted through EasyChair, which will be open May 1, 2023. Visit https://haskayne.ucalgary.ca/2023EMS for more information.
Please note that all submissions involve a commitment to register and present or participate in the conference, as appropriate for the type of submission, either virtually or in person. Submissions for which no authors are registered for the conference by the deadlines above will be removed from the program and proceedings.
Submission Types:
Authors/participants can submit in any of the following ways:
- Research Paper Submissions:
These submissions represent completed papers or research projects, including empirical, essay, topic, and translation papers. These papers will be peer-reviewed and, if accepted, presented either in person or virtually at the conference, and will appear in the conference proceedings. Regular submissions presenting completed research projects are where the primary research question(s) have been at least partially addressed and answered.
These submissions can theoretically and methodologically take any form: quantitative studies, qualitative studies, new theoretical positions and so forth. Papers need to provide unique insights into important business problems offering solutions that are practical and evidence-based consistent with the mission, aim and scope of engaged scholarship.
The length of the manuscript cannot exceed 8,000 words including references. For citation and reference style, it is recommended to follow the Academy of Management Journal style (see http://aom.org/publications/amj/styleguide).
Regular submissions can follow any of the five genres of Engaged Management Review (https://emr.case.edu/contribute/) as follows:
- Empirical papers (https://emr.case.edu/contribute/empirical): Analyses of empirical data that result in findings of practical and theoretical importance, with a demonstrated influence on management practice.
- Essay papers (https://emr.case.edu/contribute/essay): Discussions of theoretical, philosophical and methodological contributions to engaged management scholarship.
- Translation papers (https://emr.case.edu/contribute/translation): Presentations of the outcomes that engaged management scholars have had while translating their scholarship into practice.
- Topic papers (https://emr.case.edu/contribute/topic): Management adaptation of the Critically Appraised Topics (CAT) as found in the medical literature.
- EMR Dissertation Digest (https://emr.case.edu/contribute/dissertation): Dissertation Digests communicate the key findings from a doctoral dissertation with findings of practical and theoretical importance and based on rigorous use of qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods.
Deadlines: Please see the Important Dates table above.
2. Poster Submissions:
These are expected to be in-progress research projects that will be reviewed and approved in advance by a select editorial board chosen by the Poster Session Chairs. Since the posters may not have any collected data or results at the time of the submission, they will be judged on the merit of the research idea, study plan, and potential implications for research and practice. If the results of the study are available, it is recommended to briefly summarize them.
Posters will be in the form of a 36-inch (width) by 48-inch (height) poster that will be mounted on poster boards provided for the session.
Some helpful hints on creating your poster can be found at https://colinpurrington.com/tips/poster-design/.
All posters will be printed and mounted at the University of Calgary prior to the start of the conference. Please email 2023ems@haskayne.ucalgary.ca with any questions.
Deadlines: Please see the Important Dates table above.
3. Doctoral Consortium Submissions:
The Doctoral Consortium is an excellent opportunity for executive doctoral students working on their dissertation research to share and develop their research ideas further with expert review and feedback from faculty members who have been chosen across EDBAC institutions by the Doctoral Consortium Chairs.
Please note: All applicants must be nominated by their executive doctorate programs and, if accepted, are expected to attend all Consortium meetings and activities on Thursday, September 7, 2023. Participation can be either in person or virtually. Submissions to the Doctoral Consortium will consist of a three-page extended abstract of the ongoing dissertation work. Upon acceptance to and participation in the Doctoral Consortium, these abstracts will be included in the conference proceedings.
Program directors (or equivalent) should submit, directly to the Doctoral Consortium Chairs, a nomination letter for all students nominated by their program for participation in the Doctoral Consortium. Nominated students should be ranked by order of recommendation.
The Doctoral Consortium will take a maximum of five participants from each school.
Deadlines: Please see the Important Dates table above.
4. Faculty and Alumni Consortium Submissions:
Submit your work or ideas for a suggested faculty or alumni panel or presentation. This is an opportunity to share experiences and engage with other faculty and alumni of executive doctoral programs about research plans and ways to use your degree to further engaged scholarship.
Please note: The Faculty and Alumni Consortia are series of pre-organized workshops and do not involve paper or poster submissions.
Submissions proposals should include the following:
- Title
- Brief description (4 -5 sentences)
- Name of chair and email address
- Panel participant names, university affiliation and email addresses
Deadlines: Please see the Important Dates table above.
5. Panels and Workshops:
Panels and Workshops are intended to be sessions on relevant topics to engaged scholarship and DBA programs, faculty, students, and alumni. Panels aim to present ideas and engage the audience in discussion. Workshops are usually offered by faculty, staff, or alumni who share knowledge of a given research topic or practice and can be interactive.
Submissions should include:
- Panel or Workshop
- Title
- Brief description (4-5 sentences)
- Name of chair and email address
- Panel participant names, university affiliation, and email addresses
Submission Instructions:
All submissions (papers, posters, panels, workshops, etc.) must be made through the EMS 2023 Easy Chair portal open on May 1, 2023. Visit https://haskayne.ucalgary.ca/2023EMS for more information.
All authors and applicants are required to create an account in the system to submit their research or applications.
