The International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS) is delighted to announce that the 14th International Symposium on Fire Safety Science (IAFSS2023) will be held from October 22 – 27, 2023 in Tsukuba, Japan. The official Call for Papers is available here.
The IAFSS Symposium, organized triennially since 1985, is the premier fire safety science meeting attracting researchers, students and fire protection engineers from across the globe. The five-day symposium will feature invited lectures from world leading fire researchers, parallel presentations of peer-reviewed papers, and poster sessions for recent work. Symposium activities will be preceded by a series of weekend workshops. In addition to the technical sessions, numerous social activities are planned to provide informal meetings and networking opportunities for colleagues and friends.
Conference Venue
The conference will be held at the Epoch-al Tsukuba International Congress Center. Tsukuba, located about 50 km from central Tokyo, is a city with an excellent combination of science and nature. Nearly 20,000 researchers engage in research activities at about 300 public and private research organizations, including the Building Research Institute (BRI) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Tsukuba International Congress Center serves as a core facility where researchers can meet and exchange ideas.
Mount Tsukuba is a popular destination for tourists and is known for its double peaks. Hiking trails to the peaks begin from the ancient shrine at the foot of the mountain. A cable railway is also available to go to one of the peaks. The Tsukuba Express is a railway line that connects Tsukuba to the central Tokyo area. For example, the trip from Tsukuba to Asakusa, a popular sightseeing spot, takes about 50 minutes by the Tsukuba Express.
Submission Guidelines and Paper Template
Manuscripts up to 16 pages in length should be submitted in EasyChair under IAFSS2023 by February 8, 2023 located here. All papers must be original work and must not have been submitted to another forum. A detailed paper style guide and template is available here.
Submitted papers will be subject to three independent peer reviews. Papers will be accepted on the basis of their quality and originality. Accepted papers will be published in a special issue of Fire Safety Journal, the official IAFSS journal, conditional upon the successful completion of an additional review step and presentation at the Symposium.
A Call for Posters and Call for Images will be issued in late 2022. Posters may describe work-in-progress or completed projects. Poster abstracts will be reviewed by the Program Committee.
Research of Interest
Submissions are encouraged on, but not limited, to the following topics:
• Material Flammability, Toxicity, and Related Testing Methods (including fire retardants, small- and large-scale testing)
• Fire Spread (including pyrolysis modeling, smoldering, ignition, and fire spread on solids)
• Enclosure Fire Dynamics (including tunnel fires, compartment fires, and spill plumes)
• Flame Dynamics (including fire induced flow, pool fires, flame heat transfer, and liquid fire spread)
• Fire Suppression (including sprinklers, water mist, aerosols, and gaseous agents)
• Structures in Fire (including structural responses to fires, e.g., steel, concrete, timber, etc.)
• Wildland Fires and Other Large Outdoor Fires (including WUI, urban fires, informal settlement fires)
• Evacuation and Human Behavior (in building, wildland/WUI, and other outdoor fires)
• Fire Risk Analysis and Fire Safety Design (including performance-based design, fire detection, smoke control, and fire codes and standards)
• Emerging Issues and Special Applications (including explosions, industrial fires, fire forensics, AI and data driven models, environmental impacts of fire, sustainability, and battery safety)
Format and Conduct
The organizing committee fully expects that this event will be held in-person at the venue in Tsukuba, Japan. There may be health safety requirements by the local venue related to COVID. As the event gets closer, the organizing committee will communicate any COVID related requirements to all attendees. All attendees are expected to adhere to the IAFSS Code of Conduct.
