The Science of Team Science and Innovation: Reflecting On Interdisciplinary Teams
Hybrid Research Workshop – Bloomington, IN, July 2, 2023
As science becomes more complex, the idea of assembling diverse teams of specialists—much like a blacksmith, a mason, and a carpenter coming together to form a Leonardo da Vinci—has gained traction as a key solution to achieve groundbreaking innovations. This high expectation of interdisciplinary collaboration has fueled the rise of teams as the fundamental unit of social organization across all fields. However, recent research suggests that simply adding more experts to a team does not necessarily lead to more breakthrough ideas. In fact, despite the growth of research teams, truly radical innovations appear to be declining.
Against this background, and in alignment with the International Society of Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI 2023)’s mission to encourage communication and exchange of professional information in the field of scientometrics and informetrics, we propose the Science of Team Science and Innovation (STSI) workshop directed by Lingfei Wu (University of Pittsburgh) and Staša Milojević (Indiana University Bloomington). This workshop will provide an opportunity for researchers from different communities (e.g., scientometrics, sociology of science, the science of science, the economics of science, and others) to discuss new evidence on the roles and functions of interdisciplinary teams in science—what they do and what they can do. We anticipate this workshop will also generate broad interest among scholars, funding managers, and policymakers and forge new collaborations among communities. The hybrid meeting will feature solicited research papers and invited keynote addresses.
For solicited research papers, we seek empirical studies on the roles and functions of interdisciplinary collaboration. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
• What data are currently available for studying interdisciplinary collaborations?
• Does interdisciplinary collaboration raise the likelihood of scientific innovation?
• How are ideas shared, exchanged, and fused within interdisciplinary teams?
• How does interdisciplinary collaboration affect career outcomes?
• What are the roles and contributions of early-career, minority scientists to interdisciplinary collaboration?
• What are the best funding mechanisms to support interdisciplinary collaboration?
• How does interdisciplinary collaboration compare across countries?
Submissions from early career scholars and from under-represented groups are particularly welcome. To be considered for inclusion in the program, papers or detailed paper outlines with a timetable for completion must be uploaded by June 20, 2023, to EasyChair:
