INVITATION AND CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Abstracts are invited for submission to the 1st Muslims in Asia Pacific (MAP) Conference to be jointly hosted by the Center for Culture-centred Approach to Research and Evaluation (CARE) Massy University in collaboration with Muslim Diversity Study and University of Otago, funded by Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ). The conference seeks to build an opportunity for scholars focusing on topics related to Islam and Muslims living in the context of Asia Pacific to connect, share and discuss the challenges that we have ahead. Our aim is to better understand the scope of research being done in Asia Pacific and Aotearoa NZ in topics related to Muslims and Islam, and to develop our community of researchers, practitioners and advocates, building a sustainable network for research, theorising, and advocacy centred on the experiences of Muslims in the region.
We welcome practitioners, academics, and postgraduate students working on topics directly in, or related to: Muslims, Muslim studies, Critical Muslim studies, Islamophobia, Muslim identity and Muslimness. We would like this event to be inclusive. A range of papers will be accepted that fit under the term “research”, including but not limited to, conceptual papers, empirical studies, reports, and interesting cases.
Topics
The aim of the conference is for Scholars working on topics related to Muslims and Islam to share their research with like-minded scholars and for researchers and practitioners to get together and discuss their research. Please note that the research focus is not only on Islamic studies, but on Muslims and their experiences as well. Below are some topics that we have outlined (but not limited to) to show the scope of the conference:
- Islamophobia
- Disinformation
- Digital hate
- Muslim experiences of inclusion
- Muslim wellbeing and mental health
- Muslim Identity
- Challenges of migrant Muslims in the west
- Policy and governance in relation to Muslims
- Surveillance and Muslim experience
- Muslim economy
- Muslims in sports
- Colonisation and Muslims
- Property, interest, riba and Muslims
- Muslims representation in the media
- Muslims, and Falestine
- Muslim youth
- Parenting and challenges of Muslims
Abstract submission guidelines
- All abstracts must be based on original research. You may submit abstracts of papers that are under review with journals.
- Abstracts must be in English.
- Abstracts should be approximately 300-500 words - no more than two pages, 12 point font.

The abstract should clearly state the:
- Title
- Topic, key research question, or focus of the project
- Method (or “Key Propositions” for conceptual papers)
- Results, along with implications and/or application
- The author(s) name and contact information should not appear anywhere in the pdf abstract you submit. Abstracts must be text only.
- List references at the end if in-text references are used.

Abstracts and Peer Review Process
The deadline is 25th Feb 2025.
- You may appear on more than one abstract (e.g., if you are supervisor to multiple students submitting on different papers), but you may only present once (to ensure that we represent a diversity of research).
- If you submit an abstract, you will also be expected to blind peer review two abstracts and provide timely and constructive feedback that can be sent directly to the submitting author(s).
- Your own abstract will be peer-reviewed, and reviewers’ constructive feedback returned to you.
Timeline
- The deadline for submission of your abstract is 25th Feb 2025
- Abstracts will be sent out for review early the following week.
- Please return your own reviews of other authors’ abstracts into the online EasyChair system by midnight March 15th 2025.
- We will return reviewer feedback to you, along with a decision regarding your presentation on or before 25th March 2025.
- The conference programme will be developed at this time.
- Presenters, please register and let us know as soon as possible after acceptance about any travel arrangements we need to fit around (e.g., not scheduling you for any early presentation if you are flying into Wellington on the day of the conference).
- Presenters must register for the conference before Friday the 15th April 2025.
- A draft conference programme will be available from 20th April 2025.
- All delegates must register for the conference by 30th April 2025;
Venue
The Conference will be held at Te Papa, Wellington, on 3rd May2025 from 9am, we will offer for morning tea/coffee and networking and will run until approximately 4:30pm (depending on the final programme). Refreshments will be provided including lunch, nibbles and networking evet at the end of the day.
A map will be sent to you with confirmation of your registration, along with the closest car parks will be highlighted in the map.
Cost
The total conference cost is $95 per person including GST; we aim to keep this conference accessible to all by keeping costs down.
We believe the conference is great value with high quality and engaging presentations, networking opportunities at morning, lunch and afternoon tea.
A pdf collection of abstracts will be made available to all delegates before the conference, either from the EasyChair website or via email. A schedule of speakers and topics will be provided to delegates on arrival at the conference.
Proceedings Publication:
We will publish the proceedings online for all.
If you wish to have your entire paper be made publicly available, then please select the option (full paper made publicly available in the proceedings).If you would like only your abstract to be part of the proceedings, then select the option (abstract only made publicly available)
