NAPS-2023 will be hosted by Western Carolina University (WCU). WCU was founded in 1889 and provides more than 115 undergraduate majors and concentrations and more than 40 graduate programs. The theme of the 55th North American Power Symposium (NAPS) is "Broadening Participation in Sustainable Power Engineering, Technology, and Education". NAPS is a student-centric technical conference in the power and energy systems field. Since its inception in 1969, NAPS has been bringing together students, faculty, and industrial partners from premier institutions and organizations involved in power engineering and research. The conference is held annually at a university in the United States or Canada. In addition to the traditional technical sessions, NAPS 2023 will focus on broadening undergraduate student participation through a dedicated track for undergraduate research. NAPS events have been historically supported by IEEE-PES and National Science Foundation since its inception.

Graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to submit abstracts pertaining to research and/or senior design projects.
Students wishing to be considered for the student poster contest must submit a 1 page-extended abstract in PDF format, written according to the IEEE template.
- Sample booklets of Student Poster Abstracts can be found in the following link Western Carolina University - Author Information (wcu.edu)
- Submissions of poster abstracts for inclusion in the Student Poster Session & Contest are currently accepted through the following online portal. The submission site is now open.
Participation in the Student Poster Session and Contest provides a fantastic opportunity for students to take advantage of all the conference has to offer. Specifically, the complementary benefits of this student program in addition to the contest include:
- Student registration discount
- Student Housing & Meal Support Program
- Industry Career Fair
Regular attendee early bird registration fee is $300, student registration discount is $200, therefore each student author is responsible for $100 registration fee. This rate is applicable until August 21st.
The Student Poster Session & Contest allows students to present their research, share ideas, and receive feedback from peers, faculty, and industry experts. Students also have the opportunity of being recognized with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place student poster awards in the undergraduate and graduate student categories.
The Student Housing & Meal Support Program provides free accommodation and meals for the conference duration to student authors to assist with travel expenses.
Students, industry members, and faculty are invited to attend the Industry Career Fair and Student Poster Session on Sunday, October 15th between 5 – 8 pm, to meet one another and network. Both events are scheduled to take place concurrently. A traditional NAPS pizza reception will follow these events between 6 – 8 pm.
Applications for the Student Support Program require at least one accepted abstract and/or paper. Student authors with an accepted paper or abstract should have their faculty advisor email Dr. Kandil at thassankandil@wcu.edu with a short (one paragraph) letter of recommendation.
