Designing a Collaborative Logistics Management System for Small Agricultural Producers

Abstract

In Latin America, small agricultural producers often face difficulties in accessing competitively priced markets, thus marginalising them economically and socially. In consideration of this, this research proposes the design of a collaborative, TIC-supported logistics model to reduce logistics and transport costs by jointly exploiting economies of scale. Synergies between producers would not only reduce costs, but also increase access to new and more competitive markets, facilitate consolidation processes and add value to products. A linear mixed integer model is used, consisting of a network of shared consolidation centres (CA) where multiple players, time periods and families of agricultural products are considered, as well as the allocation of the weight in direct trips from origins to customers and in trips with stops at consolidation centres (CA). The model takes advantage of the concept of fairness provided by the Shapley Value to first determine the formation of coalitions and secondly to individually allocate the savings obtained. The system is supported by a prototype web platform that will allow greater participation and bargaining power in the purchase and sale of agro-products used by small agricultural producers in the Department of Atlántico-Colombia, in addition to collecting the necessary information to feed the database.
