Orthosis for Pedrada Syndrome Level II

Abstract

People who suffer from Pedrada Syndrome Level 2 experience intense pain, inflammation and significant decrease in muscle power. Although rehabilitation therapies are available, they may not be effective enough for the patient to resume their daily activities within a reasonable timeframe.

In order to address this problem, an orthosis  with compressive bandaging and electrical stimulation has been designed. The goal is to reduce inflammation, pain, and prevent muscle atrophy, thereby accelerating the rehabilitation process.

The design of the orthosis is created using SolidWorks(R) software based on user requirements. Subsequently, its load-bearing capacity and lifespan were evaluated through finite element analysis. A prototype was then fabricated using FDM 3D printing technology and the TENS electro stimulator. Finally, tests were conducted on a subject with Pedrada Syndrome Level 2, which included the following measurements: qualitative pain scale, muscle capacity with electromyography and force platforms, as well as range of motion with optoelectronic cameras.

The results of the finite element analysis in static tests showed that the device can withstand a maximum compression load of 8000N. Similarly, the results of the finite element fatigue tests suggest a product lifespan of 5 years. The implementation of the orthosis in the patient resulted in a significant reduction in reported pain. Furthermore, rehabilitation with the orthotic prototype improved walking times and muscle capacity, and contributed to a successful patient recovery. Additionally, the orthosis was capable of reducing pressure in the muscle compartments and improving the patient recovery within a period of 30 days.
