Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) Systems: a Systematic Literature Review

EasyChair Preprint no. 5879

10 pagesDate: June 23, 2021

Abstract

Planning and scheduling are important functions for industrial systems to effectively operate. Their main aim is to detail how production resources will be used so that demand is timely met. In the literature, there are several works that propose mathematical models for production planning and scheduling for different production scenarios, accounting for different resources configurations and other limitations. However, it was only recently that advanced planning and scheduling systems (APS), that make use of these models, started being more widely used and discussed. This paper presents the results of a systematic literature review, developed by applying the Proknow-C method, on APS systems. An overview of the main publications is provided, discussing application areas, barriers, drivers, architectures, and integration with other production functions. The future of APS systems is discussed, particularly regarding their role in Industry 4.0 – and how technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and artificial intelligence will impact their development.
